We love the sentiment behind Clay on Words’ artwork as well as Sarah’s attitude to her business
What’s the story behind your name?
The name is simply a ‘play on words’ linked to the concept of the words ‘play on words’ (mind blowing if you over think it!!!)
Who runs your business? Do you have time to do any other jobs or is this full time?
I’m a full time design and technology teacher at a large comprehensive Manchester high
school . One day I may make it my full time venture! I find time In holidays and the odd productive no plans weekend to make stock ..
What do you make?
Colourful clay plaques that can be personalised or have existing quotes on. The plaques get turned into other gifts and cards also.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I try to occasionally do off beat quotes or may be a little offensive to some! I do a lot of quotes we all need in life at times and ones that kick you up the bum!!! They come from films, song lyrics and general pinterest love!
Where can people find you?
I sell online on Etsy I have a Facebook page and I’m at the monthly Worker Bee Markets in Bramhall and Heald Green
Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to start their own creative small business?
Don’t expect it to just work first time – especially a market stall … 7yrs into markets and I still change my stall layout, tweak my stock, take advice from others and am not scared to try new things. Check out a market before signing up to it and also give yourself credit! Every now and then take stock of what you’re achieving! A lot of us makers are holding down a job and making something of our hobby! So look at you! Smashing it and if the sales are good then that’s the cherry!
