Banshee Trading have turned a hobby into a business creating unique ironware
What’s the story behind your name?
The name came about through a friend of ours who had a trike called ‘Raving Banshee’. He used to say I was like one when I was busy-being, trying to organise the, when we were going to a bike rally or car show. So the name ‘Banshee’ has stayed around because of this!
Who runs your business? Do you have time to do any other jobs or is this full time?
Ruth and Alf. We both forge, weld and finish off all the products sold on our stall. We both work in our forge at home Alf is based at home all the time. Ruth only works in the evenings and weekends as I also work full time as an accountant for and engineering company.
What do you make?
We make garden art, key rings, plant supports, welly stands, pumpkin/plant holders and whatever unique gift items we create from recycled horseshoes, steel, nuts, bolts etc.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Inspiration comes from things we see in general life, ideas from items Alf has made for our own allotment, Pinterest, grandkids.
Where can people find you?
We don’t run as a full time business due to Alf not being in the best of health. However, you can find us at Worker Bee Markets in Bramhall Village, Broadstone Mill (Reddish) and Brookside Garden Centre (Poynton) in 2020.
Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to start their own creative small business?
If you want to do anything in life you have to go for it. Hopefully it will be great. However, if it doesn’t work then it’s better to have tried than to have done nothing.
